Blog Journal #4 Twitter, Digital Divides, and software

Hey everybody!

Twitter. This semester I learned that this website and app can be used more than just a social media platform but a way to develop your resources and network with people in your field. When I started my twitter I wanted to follow some historians and museum workers to see what they are thinking and how they use to platform in their career. I was worried that I was not going to find anybody to follow and that it was not a thing for historians to use twitter, in general.

Oh boy, I was so wrong. Historians love Twitter to an extent that I did not expect at all .

It was really surprising and inspiring that all these historians where actively talking about their work and reaching out to other historians. The main way I saw all this was through #twitterstorians which took me to historians and history professors talking about their research, work, job openings, how to teach a class and many more topics. One thing I saw a lot was people asking for help either on finding books or articles on a certain subject. Which allowed a way for a vast network to share resources with each other and allows more collaboration between historians through twitter.

Academic software allows researchers, teachers, and students to utilize technology to make their work more efficient and accurate. One example is citation mangers like Zotero or Mendely, I love citation mangers cause they make referencing in papers so much easier. Ever since I downloaded Zotero for my summer research and upcoming Honors in the Major thesis I am starting next semester, it has saved me so much time and effort. Here is a photo of mine;
The software allows me to save the citation directly from the archive databases, thanks to the chrome extension and gets all the info in a clear manner. Then, Zotero can create a works cited page in any format with the list you have. I want to use this to show my students that citation managing is not a hassle and that may allow them to use it more because citing your sources is so important to get through your students.

The Digital Divide is a subject that I was not familiar with at all. This concept sheds light that there this a divide that we can see with people that is hidden under all the glitz and glam of 21st century technology. We do not hear the effects of how not having the resources to use technology, due to several factors depending on the person, may negatively effect their skill sets for the future. As educators, we cannot take for granted that every student we encounter has a computer, because we do not really know if they do. What this means for educators is we have to find a balance in incorporating technology in our lesson plans. We need to find a way to not put those who do not have the latest tech at a disadvantage while at the same time allow them to work with tech to get them ready for the future.

Blog #8

Hey everyone, Diigo has been very interesting to work with these through the last GICAs that we did. It was a program that I never knew about or even heard of. Diigo for me is great cause allows for a group to crowd source resources and articles. This would allow teachers to use crowd sourcing in their career more with both students and other teachers. I can see apply what we use Diigo for in our GICAs in a regular classroom with whatever topic we are working on, so they can see how to use the program and how they can work together to retrieve and annotate possible sources for a project or paper. The ability to comment on others annotations is also a really good way students to work together and talk about sources. Bloom's Taxonomy in lesson creation can be boosted through technology, to prove this, I will go over how PowerPoint can help at each level of the Taxonomy chart. Create: PowerPoint assignment are a great way to put the students in the shoes of the teachers and gi...

Blog 5: Diigo, Blogs, and Web 2.0 Tools

Hey everybody, We are starting to work more with Diigo in class with GICAs and in class activities. In the beginning of the semester I had no idea what it was or what even "social bookmarking" meant. Know that we have had sometime to use the program, its a cool concept that I did not know was out there that people and educators can use. I like the idea of crowd sourcing through annotated websites or articles cause allows more groundwork to be cover when researching a topic in a group because more people are finding relevant resources for you to explore. The interface and how the program works can be fixed in my opinion. The program feels a bit clunky at times when I am trying to annotate it and that makes it feel like I cannot annotate it the way I want to. Overall I think social bookmarking is something I want to explored more in my career. Blogging is something I thought I would not like to do because to be honest, I never saw myself having a blog ever in my life. Thoug...

Blog 10: Data Collection, Blogs, and New Skills

Hey everybody, I think I can use data collection and reporting as a history teacher as a way to check my students' knowledge about topics so I can better know what I should teach and what I can skip over. I could let them do a survey at the beginning of the year or semester, asking how well they know certain historical topics and ask them what they want to learn. This would help me better refine my lesson plan and make it a better fit for my class so I am not going over things they either already know or something they are not interested in. With data reporting, I think I would use it as a way to better visualize certain things for them to understand. I love visualizations, as seen in my two ILPS, therefore I would use excel to make some simple graphs and charts to show them a new way to look at the numbers/data. My favorite thing when I was looking at other peoples blogs was looking at there assignments that we had to post about. Seeing every bodies website, PowerPoint and ILP...
