Hey everybody,
This blog is talking the importance of having a personal websites as a teacher or for your own class and about my experiences at the Tech Sandbox.
Teachers websites are not a thing I have encounter in my middle school or high school. I researched my schools and saw that they just followed the same template given to them by the Palm Beach School County. This meant that there was no teacher website that I could look at that came from one of my past schools. To be fair to them, most of that was done on Edline, which was our version of Canvas or Blackboard. Therefore I choose to pick ones that I found online. I found some teachers pages from Fairview Elementry School (http://csdcomets.sharpschool.net/schools/fairview_elementary_school/teacher_classroom_pages)
The first page I was directed to was an overview of all the teachers in this school. The overall look is okay, it isn't as engaging as i want it to do but it is not as bad as some others that I saw before landing on this page. Once you select the grade (which goes from K-6) you are transferred to a home page for the grade which details the overall goals and standards for that grade in math and reading. While this is important info to give, it kinda felt out of no where on the page. This info should be on its own page and not in the general home page.
Once you select a specific teachers, which I choose Kindergarten, it redirects you to their own page. The teachers pages are much more creative because they got to create it themselves so they could personalize the look of it (except for one of the kindergarten teachers who did not). The best page of the group was from Mr.Kurkos. His web page followed the C.R.A.P.S guidelines and organized the info very effectively. This is what I expect to see when it comes to a teachers page because it allows both him and parents to have all the info and not be confused by anything.
What these websites show me is that technology allows teachers and future teachers like me to be more efficient and proactive when it comes to their professional responsibilities. Having one place where all the info is stored and can be accessed easily allows teachers to focus more on the lessons. Tech can allow teachers to track the progress and goals of their students in a more effective manner than before. Another way I could use tech is through a software known as Slack which allows for more informal communication to happen between the teacher and the student or student to other students that dose not rely on email.
I had a really fun and informative time at the Tech Sandbox last week. I never thought about all the different new ways tech was being introduced into the classroom. One of the things that really intrigued me was the 3D printers and pens that the Sandbox had for us to look at and used. 3D printing can allow more engaging and accessible learning to happen in the classroom. One example on how it can be engaging was shown at an event at the Dirac library where they showcased archaeological artifacts that were 3D printed. This would allow students to have a model which they can look and touch rather than having just a static photo of the artifact. Another example I saw was a cube that had braille on it. This would allow more accessible learning to happen for those who have sight impairments to better learn because its more engaging than traditional resources.
The last thing I did was with the 3D pens, I created a little octopus. Which was very fun and is now on my bookcase to remind of the time I went to the sandbox.
