Introduction!

Hello everybody! My name is Eli and this is my blog that I will use for my Introduction to Educational Technology course at FSU. I am a third year student majoring in History and minoring in Museum Studies. I am planning to going to graduate school after I graduate from FSU in order to become a professor in Ethnomusicology, which is the study of the social and cultural importance of music around the world. Personally I have a particular interest in Latin America and the Caribbean music and its evolution throughout history.

My prior experience with using tech in an educational setting was first having computer lab in elementary school. I remember the whole point of the class was to get us to type faster through programs but us kids were more excited to play games after we completed our tasks for the day. Then in middle school, most of my teachers had Smart boards which was really cool to see because they could do a lot of things with that in their class. However, when I went to high school, they did not have those smart boards and were using regular white boards in the classroom.

What I want to learn from this course are tech skills that I can transfer to my future career as a professor in order to integrate tech in an efficient and effective way for my students. Because I want to teach something that is very academic, I believe that tech can be used to help students and researchers to bring the field into the 21st century. As well, this course can teach me new things I can do with programs that I already have experience in. Then, learn about programs I have never heard of and be able to use them later in life.

  1. Hello Eli, I find it super fascinating that you want to teach Ethnomusicology. Music moves us and influences our own personal rhythm. On another note I also want to learn how to efficiently use technology for my prospective students, seeing as I want to be an Elementary educator. Figuring out the skeletons of technology will be an advantage for sure. Great introduction Eli!

  2. Wow! It's so cool how you know exactly what you want to do! I really respect that. I think it's really interesting that you're so passionate about ethnomusicology and Latin American and Caribbean music. Good luck with everything and I'm sure that technology will be super useful in accomplishing your goals.

Blog #8

Hey everyone, Diigo has been very interesting to work with these through the last GICAs that we did. It was a program that I never knew about or even heard of. Diigo for me is great cause allows for a group to crowd source resources and articles. This would allow teachers to use crowd sourcing in their career more with both students and other teachers. I can see apply what we use Diigo for in our GICAs in a regular classroom with whatever topic we are working on, so they can see how to use the program and how they can work together to retrieve and annotate possible sources for a project or paper. The ability to comment on others annotations is also a really good way students to work together and talk about sources. Bloom's Taxonomy in lesson creation can be boosted through technology, to prove this, I will go over how PowerPoint can help at each level of the Taxonomy chart. Create: PowerPoint assignment are a great way to put the students in the shoes of the teachers and gi...

Blog 5: Diigo, Blogs, and Web 2.0 Tools

Hey everybody, We are starting to work more with Diigo in class with GICAs and in class activities. In the beginning of the semester I had no idea what it was or what even "social bookmarking" meant. Know that we have had sometime to use the program, its a cool concept that I did not know was out there that people and educators can use. I like the idea of crowd sourcing through annotated websites or articles cause allows more groundwork to be cover when researching a topic in a group because more people are finding relevant resources for you to explore. The interface and how the program works can be fixed in my opinion. The program feels a bit clunky at times when I am trying to annotate it and that makes it feel like I cannot annotate it the way I want to. Overall I think social bookmarking is something I want to explored more in my career. Blogging is something I thought I would not like to do because to be honest, I never saw myself having a blog ever in my life. Thoug...

Blog 10: Data Collection, Blogs, and New Skills

Hey everybody, I think I can use data collection and reporting as a history teacher as a way to check my students' knowledge about topics so I can better know what I should teach and what I can skip over. I could let them do a survey at the beginning of the year or semester, asking how well they know certain historical topics and ask them what they want to learn. This would help me better refine my lesson plan and make it a better fit for my class so I am not going over things they either already know or something they are not interested in. With data reporting, I think I would use it as a way to better visualize certain things for them to understand. I love visualizations, as seen in my two ILPS, therefore I would use excel to make some simple graphs and charts to show them a new way to look at the numbers/data. My favorite thing when I was looking at other peoples blogs was looking at there assignments that we had to post about. Seeing every bodies website, PowerPoint and ILP...
